Chitabe Camp
Friendly and warm, we love this land camp in the Southern Delta’s Chitabe Concession. It is part of the Wilderness Safaris group of camps and owned by wildlife photographers Dave & Helene Hamman. The area is known for its wild dog research and has particularly good game viewing between August and November when the Delta’s annual flood waters are retreating.
With its open grasslands, this area doesn’t feel as though you are in the Okavango Delta as you imagine, but the scenery is magnificent and your game experiences on nature walks and day and night drives reveal prolific wildlife. Big game including buffalo and elephant; predators such as leopard, lion and wild dog; and a host of antelope, birds, and other animal species are seen throughout the year. But the best game viewing is when flood waters are at their peak and as they recede, ideally August to November.
The camp’s pleasant and spacious canvas tents are built on wooden decks leading to the central, thatched main areas and the extensive views over the floodplains. A family unit makes this a good option for children and there is a pool to soak in during the hottest times of the day.
Chitabe offers a dry, grassland experience. For this reason we like to combine it with a more water-focused camp in the delta to give guests a complete delta experience.
