Salta & the Northwest

In both culture and landscape, Argentina’s Northwest shares more similarities with its altiplano neighbors of Bolivia and Peru than it does with the rest of Argentina. Populated by indigenous communities for thousands of years, this region was eventually incorporated by the Inca and ultimately settled by Spanish colonists. Today, it offers travelers a well-balanced experience of natural beauty, rich history and culture, and award-winning vineyards.

Salta, which acts as a gateway to the Northwest, is a historic city with colorful colonial architecture. The leafy plazas and world-class museums are a great introduction to the region. Venturing outside of the city, travelers are rewarded with dramatic and ever-changing landscapes. In a matter of hours, one can experience valleys full of cacti, otherworldly rock formations, multi-hued hills, expansive salt flats, and lush vineyards.
